What is tourism?
According to Britannica, tourism is the act and process of spending time away from home in pursuit of recreation, relaxation, and pleasure, while making use of the commercial provision of services. Yet, we can be tourists in our community, right here at home, if we take advantage of the relaxing pleasures provided. We have several amenities in Chattooga County.
Let's get out and enjoy homegrown FUN!
The City of Summerville Main Street hosts a variety of events in the downtown area centered around the train excursions from Chattanooga; they arrive in Summerville where they are turned around on the turntable between the depot and Dowdy Park.
Keep up with the activities on their Facebook page: City of Summerville Georgia.
Sloppy Floyd State Park is a favorite of locals and tourists alike. They offer fishing, boating, camping and hiking. With an array of overnight stay options they are just the place to relax! The park has an active "Friends" group who keep the grounds in tip-top shape and offer activities throughout the year. You can find friends on Facebook and get more info on the Georgia State Parks site.
The Lower Chattooga River cuts through our county inviting kayakers to launch and prepare for all-out family fun! Primitive put-ins can be found from Trion to Summerville, but if you want finer amenities, seek out the official launches to the south, one in Lyerly and one in Chattoogaville.
Want a unique experience? There is nothing more eclectic, more inspiring, and more homegrown than Howard Finsters Paradise Garden between the towns of Summerville and Trion. From the hand-built chapel cupola to his massive mosaics and sculptures, Howard Finster transformed himself, through self-taught artistry, from a simple preacher/bicycle repairman into a world-renown influential folk artist.
